Social media is vital to online journalism. The BBC News website realizes the importance of social media and uses it in all of it’s articles. Every article has a share option to Twitter and Facebook. There is an option to email the article to anyone, including yourself. The biggest part is the ‘Share’ button, which allows you to share the article to a variety through a variety of sites. Some of these sites are Google +, Linkedin and Reddit. Some of these sites are more known that others, but the BBC News website includes them anyway.
Live coverage of events always have ‘live tweeting’ going on at the same time. This would be seen in a Twitter bar to the side of the live footage and this would show reactions and updates over Twitter to the event. The BBC has multiple Twitter accounts for the various areas it covers, such as BBC News (UK) and BBC Breaking News. There is also a bar with a number next to the sharing options back on the main website near the article and this number represents the times the article has been shared.
The BBC also hosts talks called “Roundtable”, which operate though the radio program. These are held in a Google Hangout-style video chat and often include a BBC reporter and a few experts. Sometimes one or two average people with opinions or some involvement in the matter will be included. I don’t see them talking to much to their followers on Twitter, but I don’t notice other news agencies doing it either. I would like to see more interaction, but I believe the BBC is doing well in the areas of social media.
BBC’s website is http://www.bbc.co.uk and is a favorite news site for me. The main site has mostly white on it, which is changed with the surrounding colors around news stories. There is a slideshow with the top eight news stories at the time. These stories are not in one area either. They can be form politics, sports or even areas like science features. Scrolling down has various news areas, such as sports and business, sharing a close space. It’s not too bunched together, but it can seem too tight for some people. I like it because it seems more organized to me.
Clicking on an article leads you to it’s topic area. An example would be an article on the mall attack in Kenya. Clicking on that article would lead you to the article, but also the BBC News Africa section. From here, you can go to BBC News from areas like Latin America, US & Canada, Mid-East, Asia and more. A bar with these locations appears and includes options like Sci/Environment and Business. There are boxes for ‘Most Read’, ‘Most Shared’ and ‘Most Viewed’. The BBC news website also has live coverage of certain events that are available on the website when they happen. The website also has the option to access their radio and weather reports for all over the world. The one thing I believe would make the site better is more articles with comment sections. I sometimes wish I could see some comments on articles, but there is no comment section. Other than that, I wholly enjoy the BBC News website.

Brittany Marie Thompson is a member of LIU-Brooklyn’s tennis team, but hides much more beneath her tennis profile. Brittany is 20 years old and is in her third year of college. While tennis is not the only thing that matters to Brittany, it has been an aspect of her life for many years. Brittany has been playing tennis since she was 12 and entered her first tournament at the age of 13. Despite playing tennis for over eight years and entering competitions along the way, Brittany has no plans to play tennis professionally. Her plans for competitive tennis go as far as her years in higher education. She does mention continuing to play it recreationally, but not in a competitive way.
What hides behind Brittany Thompson’s athletic abilities might not seem so obvious. First of all, she is an artist. Brittany enjoys to draw and play music recreationally, which can help her calm down after a not-so-pleasant match. Pretty much any event that involves art can interest Brittany, but only in a recreational sense as of now. However, that is not the only thing that makes up Brittany Marie Thompson. She admits there is one more part of her that she feels makes her interesting. It’s something Brittany believes most people would never guess about her and she might be right.
The part of Brittany that she believes makes her interesting is that she truly enjoys playing video games. These games are not restricted to a specific genre either, such as sports games. She is not that predictable. Brittany Thompson is a woman of many talents and interests. She may not have her future set in stone, but her path is filled with plenty of interesting activities. Brittany Marie Thompson is certainly an interesting individual.
I never thought social media could be used for more than communicating with friends online. This was how I felt when I first started using social media, but my view has drastically changed since then. I started using Facebook in 2009 and that was only because my high school friends kept asking me to get an account. I also felt it was a good way to keep in contact with them, since few people traded phone numbers or such contact information. I quickly noticed that not being involved with social media can cause a person to be behind in receiving news. This is a very important aspect of social media for professional journalists and aspiring ones. Social media can alert people to news happening across the world in a short amount of time, which is an aspect I have seen personally many times.
I never considered what it was like to be a creator of social media. I don’t know if posts made on Facebook count as creating social media, but I do believe posts made to groups or pages on Facebook definitely count. I see it as creating social media if a large enough audience receives it, but I suppose that can be true for personal posts to friends as well. A person is creating new parts of social media when they post to a friend’s wall or on their own wall, so it should count as creating social media as well. I know Twitter is popular as a source of creation in social media. It demands the tweets be short and to the point. I joined Twitter this year and I have not tweeted a lot. In fact, most of my tweets are still about personal events in my life. I have tweeted about an event I went to, but that is about it.
I suppose there is no rule that says Twitter or any social media site has to always be one way or another. Twitter can be used professionally or personally, just like Facebook, WordPress or any other site. I recently made a story on Storify and it involved a few other sources from social media. These sources included Twitter, Flickr and YouTube Creating my own story or social media was an interesting experience. Even though some people may have written about the topic or feel the same way I do, the story is from my mind and is uniquely mine. The sources allow the people who own them to see my story, other people to see my points through those sources and spread the event throughout the social media world. Overall, I would say I don’t see myself completely abandoning social media at any point in my life. Even the elderly can benefit from understanding and using social media. Important news events can often be found sooner on social media sites than on television or radio. Social media is evolving and people need to keep up with it. If a person is not involved in social media, then they will soon find themselves missing a lot in the world.

I find it fun to make up names sometimes and it gives some people a “peace of mind”. There are many ways to find out the real name of someone, but a person using a pseudonym might feel it protects them. I choose to use one because it is a name I
prefer being called and it’s not very elaborate. I also think pseudonyms can also be stimulating to the imagination because people can think of very creative names. Many people use names other than their birth names. Some entertainers have stage
names and other people use their nicknames more than their real names. I find no problem with using pseudonyms overall. If you want to be professional, then it might be best to use your real name. Using a pseudonym and being professional
would most likely involve making your real name known, while establishing that you prefer to be recognized by the pseudonym.
Finally getting a post through. I hope this ends up going well and maybe even being fun. I will admit I feel tired by having all these sites or blogs, but it might not be as bad as I think. Maybe I will even keep this blog, but I might deactivate any
accounts I don’t use. Deleting them might not be a good idea because I might use them one day and redoing the sign up procedures would be a pain. I just feel so tired lately due to the workload and pressure of once-a-week classes. I hope those
classes work out well too. Here’s hoping for the best. I think I’m interested in PR, so I wonder how useful a blog will be there. I think I see a purpose there.
